Born in New York City, Jamel was raised on the Lower East Side though part of his youth was spent in Harlem, NY and Coney Island, Brooklyn. In an era where hip-hop, soul, funk, jazz, classic rhythm & blues, and house music were prominent sounds played in his household, it's clear how this music has had a significant impact on his sound and can often be heard in his DJ sets. Also a fan of electronic dance music, techno, and trap, Jamel's sound is always distinguished by his favor for bass.
